Ocho Ríos

Jamaica's lush north shore — a fundamentally different Caribbean aesthetic.

About Ocho Ríos

Ocho Ríos sits on Jamaica's north shore, between Montego Bay and Port Antonio. The visual identity is fundamentally different from the Mexican or Dominican Caribbean — lush green mountains drop into the sea, waterfalls cut through the interior, and the cultural feel is distinctly Jamaican rather than tourist-corridor anonymous. For destination weddings, Ocho Ríos works best for couples looking for a Caribbean setting that doesn't look like every other beach wedding. Moon Palace Jamaica is the Palace family property in this area; Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall sits closer to Montego Bay (Rose Hall area). The Ocho Ríos area is the right call for couples whose guest lists can absorb slightly less direct-flight density than Cancún or Punta Cana.

Airport & Transfer

Most guests fly into Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay — there are some Kingston flights but Montego Bay has the better destination-wedding transfer infrastructure. From MBJ to Ocho Ríos is roughly 90 minutes by ground transfer.

Best Wedding Seasons

December–April is peak season. May and November are shoulder months. June–October is hurricane season; Jamaica sits slightly outside the most active hurricane corridor but planning awareness still matters. Spring (March–May) is one of the prettiest times to be on the north shore.

Why Ocho Ríos

Ocho Ríos is the underrated destination wedding option. The photos look genuinely different from Caribbean beach-wedding norms — mountains in the frame, waterfalls reachable as group excursions (Dunn's River Falls), and a stronger sense of Jamaican cultural identity than tourist-zone properties elsewhere offer.

Frequently Asked

Planning a Ocho Ríos wedding

Why choose Jamaica over Mexico for a destination wedding?

Different visual identity (lush mountains and waterfalls vs. Caribbean beach), different cultural feel, different food. The trade-off is slightly longer airport transfers in Ocho Ríos (90 min from Montego Bay) and slightly fewer direct flights from western Canada.

Is the airport transfer to Ocho Ríos really 90 minutes?

Yes. Most international flights land at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay. The ground transfer to Ocho Ríos resorts is roughly 90 minutes via the North Coast Highway. Group transfers are standard with all our resort contracts.

Are direct flights to Jamaica easy from Canada?

Direct flights from Toronto and Montreal to Montego Bay are available year-round. From western Canada (Vancouver, Calgary), most options route through US hubs or eastern Canada.

What's a good group excursion in Ocho Ríos?

Dunn's River Falls is the standard add-on — a tiered waterfall guests climb up in groups. We coordinate group bookings as part of the wedding-week itinerary.
