Where in Mexico

Best Regions for Your Wedding

Cancún

Cancún is Mexico's most established destination wedding hub — the airport (CUN) is the busiest in the country and connects directly to dozens of US and Canadian cities. The hotel zone runs along a 14-mile barrier island with calm Caribbean waters protected from the open sea, ideal for beachfront ceremonies. Expect a polished, family-friendly resort experience with predictable infrastructure and the broadest selection of all-inclusive properties at every price point.

Best for

Couples who want easy travel for guests, large group bookings (50+), and the widest resort selection.

Riviera Maya

South of Cancún, the Riviera Maya stretches roughly 80 miles along the Caribbean coast through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, and Tulum. This is where you'll find the most architecturally distinctive resorts — many built into mangrove and jungle settings — and the highest concentration of cenotes (underground freshwater pools) for unique ceremony or rehearsal-dinner venues. Slightly less crowded than the Cancún hotel zone with a more boho-chic feel, especially toward Tulum.

Best for

Couples wanting a more design-forward, nature-immersed setting; mid-sized weddings (30–80); jungle or cenote ceremonies.

Tulum

At the southern end of the Riviera Maya, Tulum is the most boho-luxe of Mexico's wedding destinations. Cliffside Mayan ruins overlook the beach, jungle eco-resorts replace tower-style all-inclusives, and small boutique properties accommodate groups of 20–50. Expect a slower pace, less infrastructure, and a higher price point relative to Cancún for similar guest counts. Cell service can be patchy in the jungle zone.

Best for

Boho-luxe couples, intimate weddings (20–50 guests), photography-driven celebrations.

Los Cabos

On the Pacific side, at the tip of the Baja peninsula, Los Cabos delivers a completely different aesthetic — desert meeting ocean, dramatic rock formations, and golden-hour light that wedding photographers travel for. The water is rougher than the Caribbean (Pacific surf, often not swimmable for ceremonies right at the shore), but resort beaches are typically protected. Direct flights from US west coast cities are abundant; Canadian routing usually requires a connection.

Best for

Couples wanting desert-meets-ocean drama, golden-hour photo locations, and a more arid climate.

Playa del Carmen

The walkable beach town between Cancún and Tulum — Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) gives guests a real downtown to explore, with restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance of resorts. Ferry access to Cozumel adds a snorkeling day-trip option. Mid-sized resorts dominate; works well for 40–100 guests who want both a beach wedding and a town to explore.

Best for

Multi-generational groups who want a walkable town vs. resort-only setting.

Legalities

Legal Marriage Requirements in Mexico

Most couples planning a destination wedding in Mexico choose a symbolic ceremony at the resort and complete the legal paperwork in their home country. This is the simplest path and is what we recommend in most cases — your celebration in Mexico is identical in everything but the legal signature.

Symbolic Ceremony (Recommended)

A symbolic ceremony has no legal effect in Mexico but looks and feels identical to a wedding ceremony — vows, rings, officiant, witnesses, photos, all of it. You sign your civil paperwork at home before or after the trip (city hall in your home jurisdiction). The vast majority of destination weddings DreamWed plans use this approach.

Legal Civil Marriage

If you want your Mexico wedding to be legally binding, you will need a civil marriage in addition to (or instead of) the symbolic ceremony. Mexican civil marriage requires both parties to be present in Mexico for several days before the wedding, blood tests performed in Mexico, four witnesses with valid ID, apostilled and translated documents, and registration with a Mexican civil judge. Requirements vary by state. The process typically adds 4–6 days of pre-wedding logistics and several hundred USD in additional fees.

Documents Required

  • ·Valid passports (must be valid 6+ months past return date)
  • ·Mexican Tourist Card (FMM) — issued at airport on arrival, free
  • ·If pursuing legal civil marriage: original birth certificates, apostilled and translated to Spanish
  • ·If pursuing legal civil marriage: blood tests performed in Mexico (resort can coordinate)
  • ·If pursuing legal civil marriage: 4 witnesses with valid passport ID
  • ·If divorced or widowed: corresponding apostilled documents

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a destination wedding in Mexico?

We recommend 12–18 months ahead for the best resort availability and group rates. Peak season (December–April) and weekends fill up fastest. The minimum lead time we generally accept is 6 months for smaller groups (20–40 guests), depending on destination and date.

Do my guests need to book their flights through DreamWed?

No. Guests are free to book their own flights — we coordinate group room blocks at the resort, which is usually the bigger concern for your wedding pricing. We can also offer optional group flight rates if 10 or more guests want to travel together.

What happens if a hurricane is forecast for our wedding week?

Most all-inclusive resorts offer a hurricane guarantee that lets you reschedule penalty-free if a Category 1+ storm is forecast within a defined window of your wedding. We strongly recommend trip cancellation / interruption insurance for every guest, especially for June–November weddings.

Can we have a Catholic, Hindu, Sikh, or interfaith ceremony at our resort?

Yes — most major resorts in Cancún and the Riviera Maya have experience with Catholic, Hindu, Sikh (Anand Karaj), Jewish, and interfaith ceremonies. Some have on-property chapels; others arrange officiants and bring in cultural elements. We match couples to resorts that have demonstrated experience with their specific traditions.

Is sargassum (seaweed) going to affect our beach wedding?

Sargassum on Caribbean Mexico beaches has been an issue since 2018, with peak season typically May–August. Most resorts now have daily beach-cleaning operations and tools (booms, rakes, conveyor systems) to mitigate it. We can advise on which resorts have invested most in mitigation, and seasonal patterns vary year-to-year. Tulum and Riviera Maya tend to see more than the Cancún hotel zone.

Do we need to be in Mexico to plan a wedding there?

No. The entire planning process happens via video calls, email, and shared documents. Some couples opt for a 2-night site visit to the resort 4–6 months before the wedding, but it is not required. DreamWed handles all on-site coordination and represents you remotely throughout the process.

Can we get married legally in Mexico, or do we need a separate civil ceremony at home?

Both are possible. A legal civil marriage in Mexico requires several days of in-country pre-wedding logistics, blood tests in Mexico, apostilled documents, four witnesses, and adds several hundred USD in fees. The simpler path is a symbolic ceremony in Mexico and signing your civil paperwork at home — your wedding looks and feels identical. Most of our couples choose the symbolic route.

What does an all-inclusive wedding actually include?

Base packages typically include the ceremony venue setup (chairs, runner, basic floral arrangements), an officiant for a symbolic ceremony, a small wedding cake, a sparkling toast, a dinner reservation for your group, and a dedicated wedding coordinator. Upgraded packages add private reception venues, plated meals, open bar, premium decor, lighting, and DJ services. Resort packages typically do NOT include photography, premium florals, live music, or outside-vendor coordination.
