About Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has emerged as one of the Caribbean's premier wedding destinations, and for good reason. Punta Cana's iconic coconut palm coastline stretches for over 30 miles, providing an endless selection of ceremony locations. The country boasts some of the most luxurious all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, many with dedicated wedding chapels, gazebos, and beachfront ceremony areas. Beyond the beaches, couples can explore colonial Santo Domingo, lush mountain landscapes, and vibrant merengue culture. The Dominican Republic offers outstanding value without compromising on beauty or service.

Where in Dominican Republic

Best Regions for Your Wedding

Punta Cana

The Dominican Republic's most established wedding destination — Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) sits 15 minutes from most resort properties, and the coastline known as Bávaro Beach is famous for its row of coconut palms and powdery white sand. The largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts on the island; expect predictable infrastructure, big resort entertainment teams, and the broadest selection of complimentary wedding packages.

Best for

Couples wanting effortless travel for guests, large room blocks (50+), and the widest selection of all-inclusive properties.

Cap Cana

Just south of Punta Cana, Cap Cana is a more luxe, gated marina-and-golf community housing the most premium properties on the island — TRS Cap Cana, Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, Eden Roc, Sanctuary. Smaller scale than Punta Cana proper, with better-curated dining, an exclusive marina, and a more sophisticated atmosphere. Expect higher per-night rates but tighter group experiences.

Best for

Couples wanting a more upscale, intimate, marina-front experience without sacrificing the easy PUJ airport access.

Bávaro

Technically the resort district within Punta Cana, but worth calling out — Bávaro Beach is consistently ranked among the world's top beaches. The strip of all-inclusive resorts here is the densest in the country. Many of the most popular wedding properties (Grand Palladium, Hard Rock, Riu, Iberostar) are located along this strip.

Best for

Family-friendly large groups (40–120) wanting that iconic palm-fringed beach backdrop.

La Romana / Bayahibe

About 90 minutes west of Punta Cana, the La Romana / Bayahibe area hosts more boutique resort properties and offers ferry access to Saona Island for guest excursions. Quieter than Punta Cana with a more local feel; great if you want a calmer pace and don't mind the longer transfer from PUJ (or you can fly into La Romana International Airport — LRM — though far fewer direct flights serve it).

Best for

Couples wanting a quieter, less-developed feel and Saona Island as a pre/post-wedding excursion.

Puerto Plata

On the north coast, Puerto Plata is the original DR resort destination from the 1970s — most properties here are mid-tier and the area sees fewer wedding groups today than Punta Cana. Cooler ocean (Atlantic side, not Caribbean), more dramatic mountainous backdrop, and direct flights from a few Canadian/US cities into POP airport. A good off-the-beaten-path option but with a smaller resort selection.

Best for

Smaller, more intimate weddings (20–60); couples wanting cooler weather and dramatic mountain-meets-ocean photos.

Santo Domingo

The capital — historic, urban, with the colonial Zona Colonial as a UNESCO World Heritage backdrop. Couples occasionally choose Santo Domingo for cathedral or boutique hotel weddings, but it's not a beach destination. Combine with a few days in Punta Cana for the best of both worlds.

Best for

Couples wanting a historic urban ceremony venue or a Catholic cathedral wedding.

Legalities

Legal Marriage Requirements in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is one of the easier Caribbean destinations for a legally binding wedding — there's no minimum residency requirement, no blood tests, and the entire civil ceremony can typically be completed within 24 hours of arrival. Most couples DreamWed plans still opt for a symbolic ceremony in DR and complete civil paperwork at home (simpler), but the legal route is genuinely accessible here.

Symbolic Ceremony (Recommended)

A symbolic ceremony is the simpler path — full ceremony, vows, rings, officiant, photos, indistinguishable from a legal wedding except that no civil registration happens in DR. You sign your civil paperwork at home (city hall) before or after the trip. Most of our DR couples choose this approach.

Legal Civil Marriage

If you want your wedding to be legally binding under Dominican law, you will need to provide apostilled birth certificates, single-status affidavits (or divorce decrees if applicable), and valid passports. All documents must be translated to Spanish by an authorized Dominican translator. Two witnesses with valid passports are required. The civil ceremony is performed by a Dominican judge, typically at the resort, and the marriage is registered with the local civil registry. Add about 4–6 weeks of pre-wedding paperwork lead time.

Documents Required

  • ·Valid passports (must be valid 6+ months past return date)
  • ·Tourist card — included automatically with airfare for most travelers
  • ·If pursuing legal civil marriage: apostilled and translated birth certificates
  • ·If pursuing legal civil marriage: single-status affidavit OR apostilled divorce decree (if previously married)
  • ·If pursuing legal civil marriage: 2 witnesses with valid passports
  • ·If pursuing legal civil marriage: Spanish translations by a Dominican-authorized translator

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic?

We recommend 12–18 months ahead for the best resort availability and group rates. Peak season (December–April) and weekends fill up fastest. Smaller groups (20–40 guests) can sometimes be accommodated with 6–8 months lead time depending on date.

Is the Dominican Republic safe for a destination wedding?

Wedding-resort areas — Punta Cana, Bávaro, Cap Cana, Casa de Campo — are well-policed tourism enclaves with security at all entrances. Travel inside resort grounds and on resort transfers is straightforward. As with any destination, common-sense precautions apply when leaving the resort area; DreamWed only books with established resort partners that we've personally vetted.

Can my wedding be legally binding under Dominican law?

Yes. The Dominican Republic has no minimum residency requirement and no blood tests, making it one of the easier Caribbean destinations for a legally binding civil ceremony. You'll need apostilled birth certificates, a single-status affidavit (or divorce decree), Spanish translations, and 2 witnesses. Add ~4–6 weeks of paperwork lead time. Most couples still opt for a symbolic ceremony in DR + civil paperwork at home for simplicity.

What happens if a hurricane is forecast for our wedding week?

Most all-inclusive resorts in the DR offer a hurricane guarantee that lets you reschedule penalty-free if a Category 1+ storm is forecast within a defined window of your wedding. We strongly recommend trip cancellation / interruption insurance for every guest, especially for August–October weddings.

Are airport transfers included?

Most all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana and Cap Cana include shared round-trip airport transfers as part of the room rate, since PUJ is so close. For Casa de Campo (LRM is closer) or Puerto Plata (POP), confirm transfer inclusion with your DreamWed concierge — La Romana is often a 90-minute drive from PUJ.

Can we have a Catholic, Hindu, Sikh, or interfaith ceremony at our resort?

Yes — most major resorts in Punta Cana and Cap Cana have experience with Catholic, Hindu, Sikh (Anand Karaj), Jewish, and interfaith ceremonies. Several have on-property chapels; others arrange officiants and bring in cultural elements. We match couples to resorts with demonstrated experience for their specific traditions.

How does Punta Cana compare to Cancún for a destination wedding?

Punta Cana is typically 10–20% cheaper for comparable resort tiers, has shorter airport transfers (15 min vs. 30–60 min in Cancún), and the Bávaro coastline has the iconic palm-lined beach Cancún doesn't. Cancún has more direct flight options from secondary North American cities and a slightly larger total resort selection. We're brand-agnostic and recommend based on your specific guest mix, budget, and aesthetic preference.

Do we need to be in the DR to plan our wedding?

No. The entire planning process happens via video calls, email, and shared documents. Some couples opt for a 2-night site visit 4–6 months before the wedding, but it's not required. DreamWed handles all on-site coordination and represents you remotely.
