About Maldives

The Maldives is a chain of 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, and most resorts sit on their own private island. Couples say their vows on white sand, a sandbank or an overwater deck, then celebrate with guests in a setting that feels completely their own. Resort ceremonies are symbolic, so most Canadian couples marry legally at home first and make the Maldives the main celebration.

Overwater and Sandbank Ceremonies

Exchange vows on a deck above the lagoon, a private sandbank or a quiet stretch of white beach.

One Island, One Resort

Most resorts have an island to themselves, so your celebration feels private from arrival to farewell.

World-Class Marine Life

Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Hanifaru Bay draws large gatherings of manta rays from about May to November.

Arrival by Seaplane

Guests fly low over turquoise atolls on the way to the resort, a moment most of them will never forget.

Legalities

Is a Maldives Wedding Legally Binding?

Your Maldives ceremony will be symbolic. Plan to make your marriage legal at home in Canada, before or after you travel.

Symbolic Ceremony (Recommended)

Resorts host symbolic ceremonies on the beach, a sandbank or an overwater deck, with a celebrant, vows and décor. Many provide a keepsake certificate, but it has no legal standing. Public religious practice other than Islam is restricted, so confirm any religious rituals, officiants and ceremonial items with your resort well in advance.

Legal Civil Marriage

Marriage in the Maldives is governed by the Family Act, which follows Islamic Shariah and covers marriages involving a Maldivian national. Foreign couples, including non-Muslims, cannot register a legal marriage there. Most couples marry legally in Canada first, for example with an Ontario marriage licence and a short civil ceremony at city hall.

Documents Required

  • ·Passport for each traveller, valid at least 6 months from your entry date
  • ·IMUGA traveller declaration for every traveller, submitted within 96 hours before arrival
  • ·Confirmed return ticket and prepaid resort booking
  • ·Your resort's ceremony booking details, confirmed in advance
  • ·For the legal marriage at home: a marriage licence from your municipality (valid 3 months in Ontario)

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we legally get married in the Maldives?

No. Maldivian marriage law follows Islamic Shariah and does not offer legal marriage to foreign couples, including non-Muslims. Resort weddings are symbolic. Most couples marry legally in Canada first, then celebrate in the Maldives.

Do Canadians need a visa for the Maldives?

No visa is needed in advance. Canadians get a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival with a valid passport, a return ticket, a prepaid resort booking and enough funds. Every guest must also complete the free IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours before arrival.

Are there direct flights from Canada to the Maldives?

No. Guests usually connect once in Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, or through London Heathrow, which has nonstop flights to Malé. Total travel time from Toronto is roughly 19 to 21 hours.

When is the best time for a Maldives wedding?

January to April offers the most sunshine and calmest seas. It is also peak season, so book early. May to November is wetter but quieter, with better rates and manta season in Baa Atoll.

How do guests get from the airport to the resort?

Resorts near Malé use a speedboat. Farther atolls use a seaplane or a domestic flight plus speedboat. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so guests landing after about 3:30 PM may need a night near the airport first.

Can the Maldives host a large South Asian wedding?

Yes, with careful planning. Each resort sits on its own island with a fixed number of villas, so groups over about 150 guests often need a large resort or a full island buyout. Idols for worship are on the Maldives Customs prohibited list and non-Islamic religious practice is restricted in public, so confirm every ritual, officiant and ceremonial item with your resort early.
