Sikh Anand Karaj

Anand Karaj on a beach. The protocols travel; the planning has to be precise.

About Sikh Anand Karaj Weddings

An Anand Karaj abroad isn't a watered-down version of one at home. The Saroop has to be transported and seated correctly, the granthi has to be flown in, the langar has to feed every guest at no charge, and the four lavaan have to happen before the family eats. Most planners can't say all of that without checking a brief. We can. Sikh destination weddings have been our deepest specialty since DreamWed started placing couples in the Caribbean. A handful of resorts on the Mexican Caribbean coast — Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres, Moon Palace, AVA Resort, Hyatt Ziva — have hosted enough Anand Karaj ceremonies that the on-site coordinators know the protocols cold. Punta Cana follows close behind: Hard Rock Punta Cana has executed multiple Anand Karaj weddings, and Grand Palladium Punta Cana has the vegetarian catering depth. The reason we steer Sikh couples toward those specific properties isn't preference — it's risk reduction. A first-time-Sikh-wedding resort means you're spending energy on protocol education that should be going into the actual program. We start with the resort shortlist that already knows the difference between a Saroop and a centerpiece.

What's Distinct

Sikh weddings layer religious specificity (Saroop seating, granthi protocols, langar service, no alcohol around the ceremony) on top of a multi-day SA wedding format (Mehndi, Sangeet, then Anand Karaj, then reception). Both the religious detail and the multi-day scale have to be handled correctly. Resorts that have done it before make the job dramatically easier.

Key Events

  • Mehndi

Henna ceremony, typically afternoon, often in a garden or terrace venue. Smaller, women-led, music and food, no formal program. Day 1 or day 2.

  • Sangeet

Evening of music, dance, and family performances. Mixed setting, full guest list, dhol welcome, choreographed sets. The most photographed pre-event of the week.

  • Baraat & Milni

Groom's processional with dhol and dancing, ending in the Milni — formal greeting between the two families before the Anand Karaj begins.

  • Anand Karaj

The Sikh wedding ceremony. Saroop installed and seated under a canopy; granthi leads four lavaan (hymns), couple circles the Saroop after each. No alcohol on or near the venue during the ceremony. Roughly 90 minutes.

  • Langar

Free communal meal served seated on the floor in pangat, immediately after the Anand Karaj. Vegetarian, no exceptions. Open to every guest regardless of faith.

  • Reception

Evening reception — dinner, dancing, formal program, alcohol service permitted. Held later in the day or the following evening to keep separation from the religious ceremony.

What DreamWed Handles

  • ·Granthi sourcing and travel coordination — confirming who flies in, from where, on what dates
  • ·Saroop transportation, palki staging, and a designated room for Sukhasan after the ceremony
  • ·Vegetarian-only ceremony catering and a separate langar service line for full guest count
  • ·Dhol player booking and choreographed Baraat/Milni timing
  • ·Resort-side education on what Sikh ceremony protocols actually require — saving you from re-explaining
  • ·Bar service routing — ensuring no alcohol is visible on or near the ceremony venue during the Anand Karaj
  • ·Mehndi/Sangeet venue staging, lighting, and DJ coordination across the multi-day program

Frequently Asked

Planning a sikh anand karaj destination wedding

Can a full Anand Karaj actually happen at a Caribbean resort?

Yes — and it has, repeatedly. Several Mexican Caribbean resorts (Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres, Moon Palace, AVA Resort, Hyatt Ziva Cancun) and Punta Cana resorts (Hard Rock, Grand Palladium) have hosted Anand Karaj ceremonies with the full lavaan, langar, and pangat seating. The Saroop is treated with full protocol; the granthi is flown in; the langar is served seated on the floor for every guest. The infrastructure exists.

Where does the granthi come from for a destination Anand Karaj?

Most couples fly the granthi in from their home gurdwara in North America. We coordinate the travel — flights, accommodation, on-site logistics — as part of the planning. A few couples have used granthis based in or near the destination country; we evaluate that case-by-case based on the family's preference and the gurdwara's protocol guidance.

Does the resort food work for langar — fully vegetarian, no eggs?

Yes, when the resort has done it before. The properties we recommend for Sikh weddings have run langar service multiple times — fully vegetarian (no eggs in many family traditions), Indian preparation, served seated on the floor in pangat. Resorts without that track record require more hands-on education and we generally steer couples away from them for Sikh weddings.

How many days does a destination Sikh wedding typically run?

Three to four days of programming on top of arrival and departure days. Mehndi day, Sangeet evening (sometimes the same day), Anand Karaj plus langar plus reception, and frequently a day-after farewell brunch. Total guest stays usually run 5–7 nights.

Is alcohol an issue for a Sikh destination wedding?

Alcohol is not served at or near the Anand Karaj itself — that's protocol, not preference. After the religious ceremony concludes and the Saroop is escorted to its dedicated Sukhasan room, the reception runs as a normal evening reception with bar service. We coordinate this with the resort so the timing and physical separation are handled cleanly.
